IWA UK Becomes a Charitable Incorporated Organisation

I am happy to inform you that the Charity Commission has recognised IWA UK as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and given a new charity registration no 1170126. This elevated status takes effect from 11th November, 2016. This status makes IWA a limited liability company.

There are many advantages of being CIO.

First, and critically, an incorporated status formally expands IWA’s mandate beyond the Iteso community. IWA now exists to benefit the general public and the general public is free to engage with IWA.

Second, being an Incorporated Organisation means that the affairs of the organisation will now more than ever be governed by the constitution.

Third, the CIO now has its own legal personality and so can enter into contracts in its own right rather than in the name of individual trustees. IWA UK can enter into a contract, sue or be sued.

Fourth, the trustees will be protected in most circumstances against contractual liabilities of IWA. For example, if IWA fails to honour an obligation, trustees cannot be personally held liable.

This development is part of a systematic effort by the new leadership to transform and professionalise IWA so that it can be able to achieve her goals, mission and vision.

The implications of this new status is that IWA UK now has better legal recognition, an aspect which positions it to be able to achieve her goals and objectives. Specifically, IWA is now more empowered to generate funds in all ways it can.

I thank the former Board of Trustees, the current Board and all individuals who contributed in various ways to this milestone.
