IWA FC launched at the Milton Keynes Retreat

Iteso Welfare Association (IWA) UK has launched a football club, IWA FC, for Iteso youth in the United Kingdom (UK). The club was launched during the IWA UK Easter retreat in Milton Keynes on Saturday 26 March 2016.

The launch was marked with a football match between IWA FC and a combined team of IWA UK executives and elders. IWA executives and elders won 2-0 after their number 9, Patrick Igulot scored both goals of the match.

Addressing more than 100 people who attended the retreat IWA UK Chairman Dr Patrick Igulotannounced that the Association is drawing up a strategic plan to provide benefits to Iteso in both the UK and Teso. He appealed to members not to forget the land that they came from. Dr Igulot emphasised that IWA UK will work for the development of Iteso in both Uganda and Diaspora.

Mr Mark Pinchin from Foundation for a Drug-Free World delivered training on effects of drugs. Mark informed participants that Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a non-profit and non-religious public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs to enable them make informed decisions and live drug-free.

He said that “no one, especially a young person, likes to be lectured about what he or she can or cannot do.” Thus, his organisation provides the facts that empower youth to choose not to take drugs in the first place. Mark highlighted the dangers of taking drugs and how to help members of our community live drug-free. He revealed that drugs have a long lasting effect on anyone who takes them and that they ultimately destroy the person’s health.

IWA UK Health Coordinator Alexandra Akutwi delivered training on diabetes which she emphasised as one of today’s most serious global health problems. Ms Akutwi explained how to identify the first signs of diabetes and why it’s important to prevent diabetes rather than wait to treat it. She appealed to the Teso Community to adopt a healthy diet and lead active lives as a precaution against contracting diabetes and any other diseases that attack an inactive body.

Speaking on behalf of Team Milton Keynes (Team MK), Mr Michael Okwalinga thanked members for attending the first IWA UK event held outside London for nearly a decade. He congratulated Ms Caroline Oriokot who won a one year IWA UK membership sponsored by members of the Association who are based in Milton Keynes.

The Chairman Organising Committee for the retreat, Martin Osengor thanked members for supporting, funding and attending the retreat. He thanked members who had contributed but had not been able to personally attend the event. Both Patrick and Martin applauded IWA UK member Dorothy Elangot for donating a pristine kit to IWA FC. Participants were treated to traditional Teso food, music and dance.

Players of IWA FC include: Abraham Otuko Aide (Captain), Raphael Anyoti, Kappiliar Nyrinda, Paul Mselle, Peter Mujuzi, Joel Stewart, Charlie Tillet, Danny Kelly Ellis, Simeon Donnelly Martin, Saleh Mattar, Dawson Otonya, Courtney Apio Olet, Darren Ochen Olet, Jonathan kintu and Abraham luyo.
